Western Sports Ltd - Kingston, Jamaica

The Company is privately owned by Carl and Susan Chang and started business in Montego Bay in 1974. The Company imports sporting goods for retail and wholesale.

In 1972, Carl Chang was working for National Cash Register and was transferred to Montego Bay from Kingston as the Technical Service Representative. His interest in sports attracted requests from the local sports fraternity for him to purchase sports equipment on his business trips into Kingston. At that time, there were only three sports stores in the island. All were located in Kingston. It soon became evident that there was an urgent need for a sports outlet in Montego Bay.

In spite of well-meant advice against starting business in the uncertain economic conditions of the 1970’s, the Chang’s opened a small store at

Overton Plaza, Montego Bay with two employees in 1974, trading as Chang’s Sporting Goods. Customers came from all over western Jamaica and soon after the name was changed to Western Sports in recognition of this valuable support.

Early in its development, it was recognized that in order to supply top quality products at affordable prices it would be necessary for the Company to import products rather than rely on local suppliers. Consequently, the Company began importing from international suppliers and the success of the Overton store in Montego Bay led to expansion into Ocho Rios and Kingston.

In 2002, a second outlet opened in Twin Gates Plaza in Kingston which was devoted entirely to team sales.

Western Sports has constantly focused on supplying the highest quality of sports products for a discerning consumer and carries a variety of the top international sporting brands. The Company greatly values the relationships built over the years with customers, the sporting fraternity and staff members past and present, who have all contributed to its growth and development.
