The Bank of Nova Scotia was established in Jamaica in 1889, and has enjoyed a history of changes and transformations from colonialism to independence. What began with a small banking office in Kingston is today, a sophisticated island-wide network of 35 branches. With a staff of over 2,000 in Jamaica, Scotiabank provides state-of-the-art retail and commercial banking services to the Jamaican public.
Over the past 120 plus years we have established our reputation as a strong, stable, and reliable participant in Jamaica's continuing growth and development. Our commitment to customers, "Discover what's possible." is more than just an advertising slogan; it is backed by the experience and stability accompanying a century of continuous and progressive banking operations in Jamaica. We draw on our past to help you uncover new opportunities for your future, giving you the power to make better off possible.
Historical Background
When The Bank of Nova Scotia first planted its roots in Jamaica in 1889, banking on the island was about 50 years old. In those 50-odd years, a number of other banks had come and gone.
Until the abolition of slavery on August 1, 1834, there had been little need for banks in Jamaica. The merchants soon began to see the advantage of having a local bank where bills of exchange could be converted to drafts in sterling, which would be more readily accepted by their creditors abroad. A barter trade had long existed between the province of Nova Scotia in Canada and Jamaica. As trade expanded in Jamaica during the middle of the 19th century, the limitations of the bartering system became increasingly apparent. The establishment of a branch of The Bank of Nova Scotia in Kingston, Jamaica therefore provided the best means of placing the trade on a monetary basis, and so The Bank of Nova Scotia was born.
Our Bank has survived the great earthquake that shattered Kingston in January 1907. In the 1930's there had been social, political, and economic changes with the advent of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and the establishment of the two-party political system as successive constitutional changes brought adult suffrage, self-government and in 1962, Jamaica's full independence as a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Worse Customer service
I am rather disgruntled at the bad attitude that was provided to me by a representative at the Montego branch in Jamaica. The rep with that nasty attitude is one by the name of Ava Watson. She is in her mask and you could feel and see the attitude she gave to the rep who asked her about my situation. My spouse lives overseas and completed paying for his car loan. He emailed three reps at that branch base on the fact that there was where he took the loan. He explained the situation and asked if his spouse could collect on his behalf as he would not be able to do so. He received an email from the Montego branch email stating the car title was now at the branch and his spouse and the name was stated could collect it. No where in it did they state about a authorisation letter. Communication is key. I waited long just for attitude. If she could have just kindly stated to the rep that went to her for assistance for me without the attitude I wouldn't be writing this review even though they didn't cleanly stated. You don't deal with people who do business with the bank everyday. I myself currently have a car loan at the same branch. They need to know that full time Jamaica's require proper service

Do not send money to Scotiabank Visa card from overseas
If you send a MONEYGRAM to a Scotiabank Visa card . I am warning you as I wasn’t warned , they are going to take more than 500% of what MONEYGRAM would cost if you send it to pick up at a MONEYGRAM agent. Can’t say I didn’t warn you. You won’t get back that. Very dissatisfied and disappointed with Scotiabank. Milton I would given this O star but not allowed so I had to give 1 which should be a negative by the way.

Poor Customer Service
I am employed full time and has an account with scotiabank Fairview, but went in Scotiabank Falmouth to open another account. This was my second visit as I got tired of waiting on the first and had to leave. After waiting for approximately one and a half hours, I was finally attended to by a customer care rep, ( the yong lady with the braided hair). She asked me the purpose of the second account and I told her it was for a small business I was looking to start. Rep did not advise me that I was looking to open the wrong account or educate me on the benefits. She said " you can't open an account for business on a personal account, without even asking the nature of the business. What if it was a buy and sell, or I was a higgler. I said, but you guys would be asking me for documents I do not have access to. She said yes. I said, but I could get my employer to give me a job letter and she told me how she is going to put a note on my account to have the bank looking out for me, as if I was a common criminal. And that was it. Three hours of my time wasted. That is not the relationship I have of scotia and I am very hurt and disappointed.
