Job Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Database Supervisor, the Data Entry Operator is responsible to: 

  • Support the optimisation of revenue and detection of customs offences by ensuring that the intelligence database contains valuable data in a format that is easily accessible, interpreted and understood by all officers.     
  • Optimize revenue by providing a sound database system of support to be used by the Intelligence Branch  and operations. 
  • Maintain an effective deterrent against persons committing customs offences through misuse of incentives with a current and updated database and thereby optimise revenue declared and collected; 
  • Operate data entry equipment such as keypunch and terminals, transcribe routine pre-coded information, and verify data for accuracy and completeness per prescribed standards of speed and accuracy. 

 

Key Responsibility Areas

Technical Responsibilities

  • To receive and enter information from source documents by: 
    • Entering data from source documents according to specifications and standards into the computerized system and returning documents for filing. 
    • Reviewing output to ensure accuracy and consistency with prescribed standards. 
    • Advising supervisor of malfunctioning equipment or any other constraints which will prevent untimely completion of the assignment. 
  • Maintains the relevant database for use by the Unit. 
  • Conducts research and presents reports from the database promptly upon receiving a request from the Supervisor. 

Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Complies with the processes, systems, and controls in place within the unit to foster the effective and efficient achievement of its objectives. 
  • Ensures that the work of his/her function is adequately documented to facilitate the development of operational manuals, outlining applicable policies and procedures for the operational activities, with the view to amalgamating them into a single Operations Handbook for Jamaica Customs, with periodic updates to maintain relevance and efficiency. 

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Maintains customer service principles, standards, and measurements. 
  • Identifies and incorporates the interests and needs of customers.
  • Ensures critical success factors are identified and meet expectations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs all other duties and functions as may be required occasionally.  
  • May be required to provide witness statements, attend court proceedings, and give evidence.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Four (4) General Proficiency passes in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), or General Certificate of Education O’Levels passes in subjects including English Language and Mathematics. 
  • Certified Data Entry training and able to type at 60 w.p.m. 
  • Specialised training in database management. 
  • Two (2) years of working experience, including one (1) year in a similar capacity 
  • Knowledge of computer systems and applications. 
  • Exposure to intelligence gathering and coordination.
