Qualification and Experience
- Secondary School Leaving Certificate
- Six (6) months experience as an Hospital Medical Infectious Waste Operator (HMIWA),
Specific Knowledge and Required Skills
- Working knowledge of hospital environment
- Working knowledge of waste management policies and procedures
- Knowledge of the Public Health Regulations
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Good time management skills
Key Responsibilities will include:
Technical/ Administrative
- Operates the incinerator for the disposal of infectious/special medical waste.
- Performs routine inspection and maintenance of the special medical waste incinerator and associated pollution control equipment.
- Logs and maintains required records of incinerator operations, downtime, and maintenance.
- Maintains an inventory of materials and supplies utilized for special medical waste activities.
- Assists in developing recommendations for the correction and elimination of unsafe practices and conditions associated with the handling and storage of special medical waste.
- Adheres to the waste management policies and procedures.
- Moves levers to adjust blowers and dampers that regulate airflow and temperature, and to control charging, discharging, and quenching mechanisms of furnace.
- Opens furnace door and agitates burning refuse to facilitate combustion, using stoking hoe.
- Moves levers to open grate and drop ashes and non-combustible material from furnace at end of burning cycle.
- Replaces refractory linings of furnace, using firebrick and (mortar if necessary).
- Cleans debris from furnace room floor, using rake and broom.
- Assists Biomedical and Electromechanical Engineers at incinerator plant in maintenance and repair of incinerator.
- Ensures that adequate supply of fuel available.
- Performs any other duties assigned by Supervisor.
Special Conditions Associated with the Job:
- May be required to stand in one place for hours at a time.
- Work on a shift system.
- Tolerance of unpleasant smell.
